What is a FODMAP?

 

FODMAPs are sugars that are not completely broken down and absorbed in our gut.  They attract water and when fermented by gut bacteria, it creates gas, resulting in the gut wall being stretched and expanded. 

 

For people suffering from IBS this can result in pain, excessive wind, bloating and altered bowel habits.

Who are low FODMAP diets designed for? 

Low FODMAP diets are for people with medically diagnosed IBS, which affects 7 out of 10 people.  If you have not been diagnosed with IBS we recommend you consult with your doctor first to assess your symptoms, and to rule out other possible conditions.

What are the benefits of following a low FODMAP dietary plan?
